I haven’t posted recently because, other than visiting family over the Christmas holidays, I’ve relied on virtual interactions. This has also been due to living at my home computer writing my second book. It’s taken over a decade to research and compile contents for the project–actually, I took four years away from that project to write and get So You Want to Sing Spirituals published. However, I finally got the final edits and indexing to the publisher in March. As I write this post, I’m approximately six weeks away from getting the hot-off-the-presses book in my hands. If all goes as I hope, this hovering around the homestead should change in May. In addition to the book release on the 18th, I’m scheduled to present at the annual conference of the Association of Recorded Sound Collections in Pittsburgh that very weekend (perfect timing, IMO–which never humble). In fact, if all…

Headin’ to New York

I reached the Cedar Rapids airport on Thursday morning.  Most memorable about the drive was seeing two different semis stuck in the highway median and a third badly damaged from where it had gone into a ditch on the side of the highway.  They served as a reminder of the severity of the storm that had whipped it way through Iowa the day before. The reminder was reinforced when I found out that Chicago O'Hare was delaying flights going into that airport because they were now in the midst of that same storm--btw, this storm will be a recurring theme of this trip.  After a two-hour delay, we were finally allowed to depart Cedar Rapids.  The flight was uneventful, but the delay caused me to miss my connection to New York LaGuardia.  The flight from Chicago to New York was packed with folks who, like me, had missed earlier flights, and it was so turbulent that the attendants were unable to serve refreshments. So, instead of reaching the hotel in time to have a nice dinner with the organizers of the Burleigh Society program scheduled for the next evening, followed by spending the rest of that evening with my mother and sister--who were coming to New York by train, I arrived around 9 p.m.  and settled for leftover macaroni for dinner. Still, I'm thankful that my trip was safe and that I would be involved in a weekend doing many things that I enjoy doing. Stand by for more....

Well, I’m on the road to Canada!!  Went to work for a few hours this morning.  One of my co-workers took this picture just as I was leaving for the trip. Had a pretty good voice lesson at the University of Iowa this afternoon.  Final hearing of the four spirituals I’ve prepped for the symposium. At least that part of my presentation is in very good shape. Immediately afterward, started heading East.  With only two hours of sleep last night (really this morning), it was no surprise that I only got as far as Princeton, Illinois, before I was too tired to safely continue onward.  Princeton, by the way, is proud to say it’s the hometown of President Ronald Reagan.  I won’t hold that against them as long as they have a clean place for me to sleep. The route for Day 1: http://mapq.st/nsXTYv Off to a (hopefully) good night…
