The Bridges of Madison County (Pt. 2)
I’d scheduled my Saturday appointment in Des Moines early enough to spend the afternoon visiting the three covered bridges I’d missed a couple of weeks ago. However, when I had finished the appointment, I stepped outside and discovered that it had just rained. I learned the day’s weather forecast indicated heavy storms were likely to occur occasionally throughout the day. But the weather map showed that the storm patterns were mostly already east of the area, so I took the chance and headed southwest. By the time I reached Winterset, it was approaching 3:30 and, realizing that museums tend to close at 5 p.m., I headed to the John Wayne Birthplace Museum, which included the house where the famous actor was born in 1907. I didn’t tour the house since one of my nieces and I had visited it in 2008 nor the museum since my main intent was to…
The Bridges of Madison County (Pt. 1)
I woke up early Saturday morning with an appointment in Des Moines scheduled in the afternoon, so I decided impulsively to drive an extra 20 miles to Winterset to see the famous covered bridges of Madison County. This would give me a chance to “test drive” my new walking shoes and dash cam–both not yet picked up from the post office–plus the cowboy hat I’d recently received. One of my nieces and I had visited Winterset back in 2008 to see actor John Wayne’s birthplace. I’d been living in Iowa less than three years and was only then beginning to explore the state. I simply didn’t know that the bridges were in the area. So, I’m glad I had another chance to visit them. By the time I got the cam, figured out how to set it up and looked up information about the bridges online, it was already 11…
Day 1: Off to a Quiet Start
Left Grinnell at 10:00 to make a hair appointment in Des Moines before hitting the road. My car, Red Barron (hereafter called RB), was packed and ready for the trip. I reset her trip mileage gauge so that she could keep track of how far we actually travelled. My journey is minimally planned to allow me maximum opportunities to be flexible. This is the proposed route, which Mapquest indicated was just over 5598 miles: This first day was primarily spent driving. After taking care of business in Des Moines and filling up RB’s gas tank, we headed north. Once outside the Des Moines area, the traffic became surprisingly light for the Memorial Day weekend. This allowed us to make very good time. We crossed into Minnesota and drove until tired, so there’s not much on the picture front. Yet. But I’ve got a digital camera with a 16GB SD card…
Ease on Down the Road (Day Five–the Home Stretch)
Got started at 5 a.m. Monday because I knew I had a medical procedure sometime that day in Iowa City and couldn’t remember what time I’d set the appointment. I also really wanted to avoid the morning rush hour in Indianapolis that, combined with all of the eternally ongoing road construction, was a fate I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. Made excellent time through Indiana and Illinois. Reached Iowa City at 10:30 (got an hour back crossing into Illinois). Called the hospital and learned I had nearly three hours before my appointment, so I spent the time getting both me and the RB cleaned up and then had some lunch. At the appointment, the doctor told me that while the growth on my face appeared benign, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to remove it. So, after a shot of Novocaine, the doctor took less than 30 seconds to…
Readying to Go (More the Weekend Before)
Well, got a little packing done. Then, decided to go on a little ride. (Strange I’d want to do that considering the coming trip, but I do enjoy driving.) With no destination in mind, I ended up at a nearby state park. For some reason, I’d never visited it before today. Beautiful site. While I was parked within a few feet of a lake, a truckload of men got out and started tossing floating objects into the lake for their pair of dogs to retrieve. Looked like a great way to cool off. As I was driving back, I noticed how green the hills looked with all the corn coming up around the whole area. (You may now insert your favorite corn joke here.) The first time I drove into the state (yep, the moving van and I crossed the country from the D.C. metro area), I found two things…
